Protection Orders
Washington state offers domestic violence protection orders (DVPOs) that prohibit an abuser from contacting or coming near the victim. These orders can also include provisions for temporary custody, possession of a residence, and other protections.
Housing Protection
Washington state law provides certain housing protections for
domestic violence victims, including the ability to break a rental lease early without penalty if necessary to escape domestic violence.
Domestic Violence Laws
Washington has specific laws that criminalize domestic violence and provide enhanced penalties for offenders. These laws cover a range of offenses, including assault, harassment, stalking, and violation of protection orders.
Address Protection Program
The ACP provides a substitute address for domestic violence victims to use in place of their actual address for public records. This program helps to protect the privacy and safety of victims by shielding their residential addresses from abusers.
Employment Protection
Washington state prohibits employment discrimination based
on an individual's status as a domestic violence victim. Employers are required to provide reasonable accommodations to employees who are victims of domestic violence, such as time off for court appearances or counseling.
